American Veteran 01

Woodrow E. Snyder

1925 - 2021

Woodrow E. “Woody” Snyder, 95, of Brevard, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 18, 2021. He was born in Quakertown, PA., to the late Lyman Bleam and Lottie Eisenhart Snyder. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Doris Elaine (Meyers) Snyder on 2002 and his grandson, Tommy Snyder, who died in 2006 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

He was a Boy Scout and was educated in the Pennridge School District in Pennsylvania.  Woody was a United States Veteran, serving during World War II in the US Navy. He enlisted on his 17th birthday and served for 40 months, mostly on a landing ship in the South Pacific. Returning to Pennsylvania, he attended Moravian Prep School in Bethlehem to finish his high school education. He then graduated from Bliss Electrical School in Washington, DC and Penn State University receiving his Associates degree in 1962.  He and his wife lived in Doylestown, PA for many years, attending St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for over 46 years where he was very active in volunteer landscaping for 27 of those years.

He also volunteered over 9000 hours with Doylestown Hospital, helping with patient transport and shredding paper in the Duplicating Department. He also volunteered with the “Adopt a Highway” program where he picked up litter.

Woody worked for Philadelphia Electric (Exelon) as a lineman in 1949 and retired as a Construction Detailer in 1987. After retirement he drove a bus for Bucks County Transport, Student & Lenape Bus Lines until 2005.

Moving to Brevard in 2006, he was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd where he continued his volunteer work in landscaping and the Transylvania Regional Hospital.

He was a Lifetime Member of The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He enjoyed anything that kept him physically fit, including jogging, brisk walking, riding bicycles and volunteering. He also enjoyed spending time reading scripture and being on his computer.

Survivors include his two sons: Gerald (Dr. Helena Romana) Snyder of Doylestown, PA and Thomas W. (Joanne Booth) Snyder of Brevard; his daughter, Cheryl Lynn (Jeffrey) Harker of Lexington, SC; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Doylestown Hospital, 595 West State Street, Doylestown, PA 18901.

Woody had a zest for life and for service.  My favorite memory is teaching Woody and Dottie Tinsley their dance for Brevard Little Theatre "Dancing with Our Stars" event.  Woody smiled the entire time, was a joy!
