Walter Seeley

June 11, 1941 — December 28, 2019

Brevard, NC

Walter Paul Seeley, 78, formerly of Franklin, NC, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2019.  Born on the lower east side of New York City, Walter and his family moved to Franklin in 1982.  He has spent his last few years in the wonderful care of Accordius Health in Brevard and later, assisted by Four Seasons Hospice.

Once ranked third in the world as a boxer in the Junior Lightweight division, Walter enjoyed a remarkable career and worked under legendary boxing promoter Don King.  Being center ring in Madison Square Garden with his friends and family rooting for his win was a highlight of his life, but he was just happy most days walking through the woods with his German Shepherds.  He was successful as a boxer, not only because he had talent, but he worked hard at his craft and opened a boxing club in Franklin soon after moving to North Carolina.  While he started as Walter’s student, Reggie Holland of Franklin would go on to run the club and endear himself as one of Walter’s best friends.

Walter never missed an opportunity to dance to the song “Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown,: and being a poor singer never stopped him from singing along with Elvis Presley.  He was a proud Roman Catholic and firmly instilled in each of his children the importance of faith and family – reminding them often that when life gets tough, they would need to rely on God and each other.

He is survived by his former wife, Alana Seeley of Franklin and three children, Michael Seeley (Erica), Amy Owenby (Scott Gardner), and Brennan Seeley (Kerri Thomason) all of Asheville.

There will be no public services.  Those who remain behind are invited to raise a pint in his memory and “until we meet again, may the Lord hold you in the palm of his hand.”
