Ronald Gurtler

July 29, 1946 — December 26, 2020

Brevard, NC

Ron Gurtler passed away December, 26th 2020 in Asheville, NC. He was born in Goose Creek, Texas in 1946, and went on to live in seven states and two foreign countries.

From Cheshire Academy Prep School, Ron went to Tulane University, where he obtained a degree in law. Fresh out of law school, where he was a member of ROTC, he served as an intelligence officer in the US Air Force. Once back in civilian life, he practiced real estate law for a brief period then went into business primarily in the oil service industry, where he had the opportunity to travel to and live in places such as Norway, Indonesia, Morocco, Singapore, and Australia.

He retired in 1988 and settled in Longwood, FL where he became a hot air balloon pilot, played golf three days a week, and spent time in his woodworking shop. A passionate raconteur, Ron spent his life gathering and retelling the stories of people’s lives – often regaling his friends with stories of his family’s ancestors pulled from the hours of time he spent researching genealogies throughout his life.

His seven years living in England, and many travels throughout Europe, introduced him to the culture of the local pub, a place where he was able to indulge his love for both storytelling and hearing the stories of others. He became a part time resident of Brevard in 2005 and, after numerous visits, purchased Dugan’s Pub in 2011. He transformed the local pub into a family restaurant and a local staple, and in 2019 opened the Shamrock Room, a multi-use event space right next door.

After becoming a permanent resident of Brevard in 2014, he spent most of his time in the pub, chatting with customers and friends, and could easily be spotted as the guy who always wore a sport coat. He was a staunch supporter of many nonprofits in his community, far too many to be listed here. He served as a mentor for those who had the same entrepreneurial spirit as he did and was incredibly proud of the accomplishments of those he nurtured and supported.

He will be remembered for his generosity, his ability to talk with people from all walks of live, and the love he had for his family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Earle and Hermione Gurtler, and his daughter, Katherine Rosenbloom. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sharon Gurtler, his daughters Elizabeth Sibley of Jacksonville, FL, and Ashleigh Gurtler of Asheville, NC, his sister Ann Kimes of Barrington, IL, his brother Jeff Gurtler of Jacksonville, FL, and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made in his memory to the local nonprofit of your choice.
