Ricky Lee Whitener, 61, of Brevard, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2020. A native of Transylvania County, he was the son of the late Charles Edward Whitener and Marie Ashe Whitener.
Ricky was a guest of The Haven a few times, but most recently stayed with them for over two years until he was housed in May. While staying at The Haven, he became the first Staff Assistant and kept the shelter running from the inside during times when volunteers could not be available in the shelter. He had a wonderful smile and great sense of humor. Both of these attributes illuminated when his doctor discovered that he had diabetes and he began treatment caring for himself. Ricky was an avid reader and he had read the entire library The Haven had. Most of the book requests sent out to the community were to circulate all the books he had read and restock with a fresh supply for him to choose from. Ricky became a fixture of The Haven and was looked up to by many that were in recovery for the first time. It was said, “if he can do it, so can I”. The Haven is grateful for the community support that helped get him into his own place and his last 7 months of his life were in his apartment, in a community with friends, and not shunned and alone on a park bench.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no service at this time.
