Richard “Dickie” Etters, 71, of Pisgah Forest, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 while surrounded by his loved ones. A native of Gaston County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late John C. and Ruth Ducker Etters. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Sue Etters, and his brother John William “Johnnie” Etters.
A United States Army Veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star he had been a helicopter door-gunner during the Vietnam War. Dickie moved to Transylvania County in 1972 and over the years he worked as an EMT with Transylvania County, the Brevard Rescue Squad, a patrolman with the Brevard Police Department and retired from the Department of Transportation.
Dickie enjoyed listening to music, watching wrestling and “piddling” outside. He also loved going to the beach and eating crab legs. But loved his family most of all.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Reece Etters, sons Chad Etters (Melissa Hurst), Trevor, Kyle, and Logan; and Nelson Etters (Samantha Tutton), Matthew and Cameron Howard; three grandchildren Austin Cole Etters, Kristin Etters (Christian Larkin), and Oskar Nils Etters; and one great-granddaughter, Ella Rae.
Funeral Services for Dickie Etters will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 5, 2020 in the chapel of Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremations in Brevard. Interment will follow the service at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Pisgah Forest with military rites provided by the North Carolina National Guard and the Transylvania County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm, prior to the service.
