Malcolm Bevins

August 16, 1930 — September 3, 2019

Brevard, NC

Malcolm Irving Bevins, 89, of Brevard, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 3, 2019. He was born and raised in Burlington, Vermont. He was a son of the late Percy Everette Bevins and Florence Shaw Bevins.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister; Florence Bevins Melick and a grandson, Nicholas Deinema Riiber.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Army after WWII in Vienna, Austria. Malcolm graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelors of Science in 1952 and a Masters of Science from Purdue University in 1954, returning home to his beloved state of VT to become Professor Bevins, researcher and teacher of Economics for the remainder of his 37 year-long career that he so greatly relished.

He was the gentlest of giants and the fiercest of protectors for his three ladies—wife Sally, and daughters Lisa and Sheila. His zest for life spanned many interests including: collecting and analyzing data for the National Forest Service; being an active Mason in his community; restoring antique clocks from England; genealogy; buying and selling antique Vermont maps; travelling; and spending time with grandchildren Kirsten, Nicholas, Olivia, Liam, and Eliza. Malcolm enjoyed life. He lived it well and spread joy wherever he went.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Sally Bevins of Brevard, NC; daughters Lisa Riiber of Newark, NJ and Sheila Rafter of Wellesley, MA; and sisters Helen Merriman of Mukilteo, WA and Claire Rogers of Burlington, VT.
