Lenore Kempfer

August 21, 1940 — September 5, 2022

Brevard, NC

Lenore Lee Kempfer peacefully passed away at Givens Park Health Care early Monday morning, September 5, 2022.

Lenore was born in Kansas MO, to George Wilford Kempfer and Virginia Lee Ficklin Kempfer on August 21, 1940.  At a young age Lenore and her family moved to the Asheville area where she grew up and became a school teacher.  Lenore dedicated her life to faithfully serving children and their families mostly in the Transylvania County area until recently, when her health began to fail.

When Lenore was a child, she began attending Gwynn Valley Camp as a camper and then as a staff member.  Lenore’s role at Gwynn Valley Camp from the 1950s until recently was one of sparking insights about nature, planting special touches around camp to add wonder, and instilling connections with the lore and joy of the WNC mountains with stories, round dancing, and clogging.

Some people seem to walk the thin veil that separates heaven and earth, and Lenore was one who could clearly listen to God’s voice and communicate that peace to all who took the time to quietly sit with her.  Her true gift was to create opportunities to pause and reflect. She shared a gaze that shined God’s light onto our souls and invited us to feel the presence of God.

Lenore was a faithful longtime member of Brevard Wesleyan Church where she was loved, supported, and cared for.  Because of her love for Gwynn Valley Camp, we cannot think of a better place to remember her and give praise to the Lord for her life.  Lenore’s service will be held Saturday, September 17, at 11 AM, officiated by Pastor Richard Jelley.  We hope to meet outside so you may want to bring a chair or blanket to sit on.  There is no doubt, this community is a better place because of the life of Lenore Kempfer.  We will miss her soft, peaceful presence and we find great comfort in knowing that she is finally home.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Gwynn Valley Camp or Brevard Wesleyan Church Children’s Ministry.
