During his lifetime he was an avid fisherman and hunter. He had a great love for the outdoors, for Pisgah National Forest and for the French Broad River. One of John’s many hobbies was polishing and cutting stones, some of which he placed in pieces of jewelry. John enjoyed music and had great respect for the national flag, saluting it frequently.
