Dr Freida Gillespie Bybee, 92, of Brevard, NC, died December 12, 2021 at home. A native of Arcadia, SC, she is predeceased by parents Bryant Eugene & Clara Gillespie, siblings Evelyn, Gene, and Bill, and husband, Pete.
Dr Bybee grew up in SC, and was a 1950 cum laude graduate of Furman University. She earned a Masters degree in Exceptional Education, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Her career was dedicated to the education of students, especially those with special needs. She excelled in the supervision of their programs, including the implementation of federal laws governing special education and disabled students. She taught in SC, VA, FL, and AL. She served as Interim Superintendent of Hoover City Schools in Hoover Alabama, and retired as an assistant superintendent.
Freida enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, writing, and painting. Her hand painted Christmas cards were cherished.
Dr Bybee is survived by her children; Richard (Chapman), Elizabeth and Michael (Laura), grandchildren; Jason (Meredith), Rice, Daniel and Lucas, and great grandchild; Samuel. She is also survived by close friends and family, including Demi & Al, Fred & Mary Pat, Natalie & family, Elaine, Kathy, Linda, Barbara, Carol, Vicky, JoVeal, Mr Mitchell, Anne, Carolyn, Mavis, Nioca & Leonard, Jane & Ray, and Kent. She lovingly touched the lives of so many students, teachers, co-workers, friends and family. She will be deeply missed.
