Frances Hicks Scruggs Poor, 93, of Brevard, NC died Saturday, January 4, 2020.
The only child of the late Frank Winthrope and Helen Virginia Justus Scruggs, she was born in Brevard on July 28, 1926.
After graduating from Brevard High School in 1943, Hicks attended Brevard College. In 1944 she went to work in the Payroll Department at Ecusta, where she worked for 11 years. On February 4, 1950, she married L. C. Poor, beginning a lifetime of love that included two sons. After her sons started school, Hicks worked eight years at the Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church weekday kindergarten under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Davis. With her deep love of children, she found that experience rewarding and influential for the rest of her life. She also taught Sunday school, was involved in other church related activities, and served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts. In addition, Hicks volunteered with the Hospital Auxiliary and American Red Cross for a number of years.
A devoted wife, mother, and friend, Hicks enjoyed making a home for her family, cooking, growing flowers, preserving the bounty from her husband’s garden, and most especially spending time with her family and friends. Hicks will be lovingly remembered for her extraordinary kindness and compassion.
She is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, L.C. Poor; son Ron and wife Teresa of Sylva; son David and wife Gay of Pisgah Forest; grandson Jason Brennan and wife Irene and great-granddaughter Molly of Irving, Texas; brother-in-law George Poor of Pisgah Forest; sister-in-law Mary Nell Poor of Arden; and special niece Cindy Miller of Pisgah Forest.
The family wishes to thank Care Partners for their compassionate care and gives special thanks to Tracey Littleton for five years of caregiving, companionship, and friendship.
A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church with Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends afterwards in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Gillespie-Evergreen Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 1345, Brevard, NC 28712 or Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Pre-School, 249 East Main Street, Brevard, NC 28712.
